Position Description:

In the role of Research Associate I you will, under minimal supervision, use fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures of particular field of specialization to perform complex scientific research.

This role will be in the laboratory of Dr. William Drobyski in the Departments of Medicine and Microbiology at the Medical College of Wisconsin that is focused on transplantation immunology with a specific emphasis on the immunobiology of allogeneic bone marrow transplantation and the pathophysiology of graft versus host disease (GVHD). Other areas of interest emanating from this focus include T cell and regulatory T cell biology along with inflammation induced by innate immune cells (macrophages, microglia, and dendritic cells).

Specific areas of interest include inflammatory cytokine networks that contribute to GVHD, inflammatory cytokine signaling and regulatory pathways that impact the development of tolerance, modulate anti-leukemic responses, and induce pathological damage particularly within the gastrointestinal tract and central nervous system using genetically modified mouse models, flow cytometry, q-PCR, RNA-seq, western blot, single cell RNA seq, bioinformatics, and other immunological techniques. Recent publications include Journal of Clinical Investigation 2016; 126: 3541-3555, Blood 2018; 132(4): 435-447, Nature Communications 2018; 9(1): 5037; Blood 2020; 135(8): 568-581, Blood 2021; 137(9): 1241-1255, and Blood Advances 2022; 6(9): 2791-2803.


Responsibilities:

  • Perform immunology experiments from design conception to final data analysis and presentation of results with minimal supervision.
  • Collect, analyze and provide summations of data from experiments. Perform all necessary calculations and reduction of data errors to allow for interpretation of all experimental outcomes.
  • Prepare scientific papers and assist the Principal Investigator in the preparations of manuscripts.
  • Perform molecular biological assays using RT-PCR, real time PCR, Western and molecular cloning techniques. Adopt new techniques in laboratory.
  • Coordinate research study activities. Assist in developing, implementing and monitoring quality activities.
  • Participate in meetings with principle investigator and research staff and evaluate/interpret the validity of data, develop methodologies, evaluate lab procedures.
  • Manage and operate lab equipment.
  • Train new employees in lab procedures

Knowledge - Skills - Abilities

  • Experience with flow cytometry, ELISA, western and molecular cloning techniques, immunohistochemical staining.
  • Experience with the appropriate means of handling of laboratory animals is required.
  • Knowledge of biology, chemistry, mathematics, documentation, and records management.
  • Data utilization, complex problem solving, critical thinking, resource management, and writing skills.

Preferred Schedule: Full-time role with expectations for coverage during core business hours and flexibility required as necessary to accommodate business needs.

Position Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:Appropriate experience may be substituted for education on an equivalent basis

  • Master's degree
  • No experience required.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's or PhD degree
  • Immunology, including mouse models, flow cytometry and/or molecular biology, and bioinformatics.
